Post Operation Week 1

It’s been one week since my operation and the hardest part is definitely waiting to hear what will happen next. I received a letter from the hospital yesterday inviting me in to discuss the results. This appointment is scheduled for the week after next so I am going to have to get used to this waiting game. In the meantime, it’s impossible to make any plans as I have no idea when I will be well enough to do things as normal. This includes family get togethers, work, theatre visits and anything else I ordinarily wouldn’t think twice about.

In terms of recovery, week one has been fairly straightforward. I went to the GP at the beginning of the week and they have signed me off work for a month. My symptoms have mainly been tiredness, brain fog (yes, I did put my toothbrush in the bin by mistake!) and pain at the site of the incisions. Most of it is kept under control with paracetamol and ibuprofen. The confusion will need addressing somehow – maybe some braingym is needed?

Regular messages from family and friends have continued to arrive and these really help me to remain positive. I have had several visitors this week too which has been lovely. In addition, I have tried to keep busy with the hobbies which do not require physical effort and won’t result in chaos if my brain is malfunctioning. So watching  ice hockey, reading, writing stories and playing the keyboard have kept me feeling as normal as can be expected right now.

Onto week two, and I don’t expect any major changes to occur, other than I can now proceed to the ‘advanced’ post surgery exercises – how exciting! It’s a shame the exercises don’t include anything to help the brain, although I’ve heard that yawning is an effective way to ‘repattern’ the brain…altogether now…yawn!
